Relational Clauses in Classical Chinese from the Perspective of SFL

在 Halliday 的系统功能语法中,关系过程是人类认识世界的六个过程之一。根据 Halliday 的功能语法以及传统语法和认知语法的相关观点,对古汉语关系过程小句的类型和功能进行讨论,发现这些语法都难以解释古汉语"X 是 X"式识别类关系过程小句所表达的确切含义。研究表明,在应用任何一种语言学理论和方法时,都必须注意每种语言自身的特点,而不能盲目套用。

Relational Process is one of the six processes to represent human experiences according to Halliday. This paper attempts to apply Halliday＇s functional grammar, traditional grammar and cognitive grammar in analyzing the types and functions of the relational clauses in classical Chinese. It finds that it is very difficult to work out the exact meaning of the ＂X is X＂ type of relational clauses with the help of the above-mentioned theories and thus comes to the conclusion that every language has its own features and the blind application of an existing grammar based on a particular language to all other languages should be avoided.
