An Analysis on the Chinese Character “Oiu” and the English Word “Autumn” under Semantic and Pragmatic Comparison

根据符号语义学理论,词语的语义涵盖了多个层次的意义。其中概念意义是词语的核心意义,是对客观事物或现象的一个概括性的描述;语用意义是附加在词语概念意义上的意义,是在特定的语言环境中所表现出来的特定的意义,反映了语言使用者所属的文化特征。同一概念意义的词语在不同的文化中语用意义或有对应,或有不同。汉语"秋"和英语"autumn"的语用联想意义就体现了中英文化的差异。

According to the Semiotics, the semantic meaning of a word involves the different aspects, among which the conceptual meaning is the core, providing a general description of an object or a phenomena, while the pragmatic meaning is additional, suggesting the relationship between the linguistic symbol and its user. Under the different cultures, the word with the same conceptual meaning may lead to the different associations. The pragmatic associations of the Chinese Character ＂秋＂ and the English Word ＂autumn＂ just show the dif- ferent cultural meanings.
