Metaphor is a special language phenomenon, the essence of which lies in understanding and perceiving another kind of thing or concept through a certain kind of thing or concept. This paper takes English animal - related idioms as research corpus, giving the insight into the cognitive rationale and interpretation process of English ani- mal -related idioms from the perspective of cognitive metaphor. It turns out that cognitive metaphor theory bears a strong explanatory power on the analysis of the English animal - related idioms, developing a broad prospect for the research of English idioms.
