This paper talks about the problem in the use of word meaning in rhetoric. In rhetoric,subjects are flexible in use of word meaning. The use of word meaning can break through the limitation of semantic capacity,semantic hierarchy and word ontology. In this paper,the meaning of words is divided into potential meaning and real meaning. There are many kinds of corre-spondence between them. Highlight and desalination accompany with real meaning. The highlight meaning is the core meaning that rhetoric requires. The flexibility of meaning use make rhetorical expression more flexible,more economic,and more aesthetic.
