Irony and allusion are the two characteristics of T. S. Eliot＇s poems. In the combination of the two, Eliot used the i- ronic allusions to associate, juxtapose and contrast the characters and plots in the allusions with the two notorious antiheroes in his ear- ly poems, Sweeney and Pnffrock, to mock the present by extolling the past. The ironic allusion is in accordance with Eliot＇s concept of tradition, which stresses the respect of the past as well as the organic combination of the past and the present.
