There are many ghost stories in American Chinese writer Amy Tan's novels, which are usually told by the mothers. The story telling by the mothers are seen as a way for them to seek safety and identity in America. The reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese myth is regarded as the trace for the mothers to strike a responsive chord in the hearts of its readers.
