The twentieth century America witnessed considerable development in its drama. Eugene O'Neill used the philosophy of Laozi and Zhuangzi for reference, and his manipulation of masks found their counterparts in traditional Chinese plays. This, together with Thornton Wilder's preference to the pastoral plays and his design of the stage and the stage manager, directly or indirectly represented the influence of traditional Chinese culture, or plays, to be more specific. Although the influence was insignificant, best manifested in the vanguard dramas, they helped the dramatists reflect the introspection upon their own civilization and society by drawing the Chinese tradition as the other.
