古汉语“过程语言”论:美国汉学家安乐哲的汉语观及翻译实践

Ancient Chinese as "a Process Language": Roger Ames' View of Chinese and Translation Practice

以美国汉学家安乐哲对中国典籍的翻译为例,指出这些引起争议的英译是在过程哲学观照下的哲学解读和文化诠释,这种翻译可称为"过程论翻译"。为凸显古汉语的"过程"特征,安乐哲在典籍翻译实践中采用了"意象叠加法""通假关联法"和"多重转喻法"等过程论方法,为翻译理论和实践增加了新的思想资源。但安乐哲的古汉语过程论翻译实践与过程哲学观之间有矛盾之处,仍残留传统分析哲学的同一性企图。

Taking American sinologist Roger T.Ames’ translation of Chinese classics as an example,the paper proposes that Ames’ controversial renderings of Chinese classics are cultural and philosophical readings from the perspective of Whiteheadian process philosophy.Ames regards ancient Chinese as ＂a process language＂ and therefore adopts process translation methodology such as ＂image stacking＂,＂correlative paronomasia ＂ and ＂metalepsis＂,which shed new light on translation theories and practices.But Roger Ames’s ＂process＂ translation methodology contradicts with the process philosophy he admires,showing the traditional impact of analytic philosophy.
