This paper, briefing on the controlled root split alternate irrigation, a new idea of saving and regulating on farm water use whereby crop water requirement can be satisfied while controlling transpiration, gives out its definition, traces the historical development of studies in relation to the adoption of the techniques concerned at home and abroad, summarizes the main research findings in the technical aspects of the controlled root split alternate irrigation in the past two years and makes an analysis on some of the problems that may exist in the implementation of this technique. Finally, the prospects of the application of this technique and some of the problems demanding further studies are discussed.
