In the translation history of The Art of War , different translators competed fiercely for historical reputation. Precursory translators almost exhausted interpretation options of The Art of War due to their advantageous priority, thus enjoyed favorable position in the competition. Among the precursors, Lionel Giles developed the approach to interpreting The Art of War from the perspective of philology, and his translated version set criteria for and exert far-reaching influence on the later translators, winning him lasting reputa- tion in the history.
