The 1920's debate over 'free/literal translation' between the Creation Society and the Literary Research Society, two Shanghai-based Chinese literary groups, might appear to have been triggered by a technical issue over inter-lingual conversion. In actuality,it was caused by a far deeper difference between the two parties regarding what should be embraced as the principle for literary production. In championing expression and representation respectively, the Creation Society and the Literary Research Society made it clear that they had chosen to identify separately with the mainstream and the avant garde, and that the decision each made was ethical and political in nature and should in no way be regarded as its response to a simple epistemological question.
