On Dual Character in Humboldt's Gift

双角色人物模式是存在于小说《洪堡的礼物》中的一种特殊人物关系。本文以双角色人物模式在该小说中的展现为基础,通过对该人物模式与具有犹太文化特征的"父与子"母题的对比分析,提出双角色人物模式本质上是一个强调在认同感维系下的双角色父子之间精神传承的人物发展模式。这种隐喻父子主题的人物模式实质上是对在20世纪后现代社会中功利主义及自我主义的冲击下个人怎样才能找到生存意义的探索与思考。

In Humboldt＇ s Gift, there exists, between two chief characters, an unusual relationship, which is termed as dual character. The article commences with the presentation of this pattern in the novel, and then continues to conduct a compara- tive analysis of the pattern with ＂father and son＂ motif, which is characteristic of Jewish culture. Finally, the article proposes that dual-character pattern is, in essence, a particular characterization which lays stress on the spiritual inheritance of ＂son＂ from ＂father＂, who is tied with his spiritual son by a sense of identification. Through this dual-character pattern implying ＂fa- ther and son＂ motif, the author expresses his concern about the human life in post-modernist society： how an individual, im- pacted by utilitarianism and egoism, quests for the significance of real existence.
