The concept of Direct Engineering (DE) is introduced in this paper. An abstract description of variant design under DE is given and the characteristics of variant design are analyzed. After the study of similarity categories of variant design is made, a variant process design method which is based on the similarity comparison on general and geometric feature levels is proposed. The comparison algorithms for some similar units are given as well. The method introduced by this paper has been used to conduct the development of practical CAPP system.
