Objective To described an approach of cochlear implantation with a smaller skin incision of 3-cm. Meth- ods A total of 197 patients received Combi 40+ , Pulsar or Sonata implants with a novel approach of a 3-cm-long skin in- cision. The skin incision length was measured after closure of the skin. The operative duration and postoperative complications was also recorded. Results The average skin incision lengths after closure of the skin were 3.0 + 0.3 cm. The average operative duration was 103.4 -+ 22.4 min. No complications of cochlear implantation occurred during an average of 26.5 months of post- operative follow-up. Conclusions The minimal access for cochlea implantation can reduce the surgical complication rate with- out increasing operative difficulty, and cochlear implantation with a minimal access is more acceptable to the patients and their family.
