Edward Taylor was called a poet of ＂wilderness baroque. ＂ His poetry shines with Christian ideas through poetic artistry. He imitated John Donne and other Metaphysical religious poets of the 17th-century England in conveying theological ideas with colloquial language, using such figures of speech as conceit, pun and paradox in his poetic presentation, attempting to bring about surprise and delight in his poetry at the same time. An interpretation of his representative poems from Gods Determinations and Preparatory Meditations will illustrate his poetics of ＂ wilderness baroque＂ in combining deceptively simple and rustic images with profoundly artistic presentation of religious themes in his poetry.
