It is,for Nabokov, a constant theme to concern for lit-erature in the text of his novels. Literature as a theme, is an im-portant feature of Nabokov＇s fiction. This study explores the rela-tionship between ＂literature as a theme＂ and the metafictionality of Nabokov＇s novels of the early period. It analyzes the relation of the issues, such as the relationship between Nabokov＇s imita- tion to and criticism of his precursors in his early novels, the problem of literature and reality,the multilayered intertextual nar- rative strategy, as well as the application of literature as a theme, etc. ,to the evolution and procreation of the metafictionality of his early literary production. The study shows that the exploration of the issue of ＂literature as a theme＂ will enhance the reader＇s cognition of the literariness of Nabokov＇s novels and it will like-wise provide reference for the related studies of the same issue.
