Safeguarding national energy security in an open economy——roundtable on “The impact of North American energy independence on China”

北美页岩气革命对全球油气格局产生重大影响,并给中国带来机遇和挑战。北美能源独立对中国的影响总体为机遇大于挑战,中国应当把握机遇,积极参与全球能源治理,在开放的格局中维护国家能源安全。

On March 27, 2013, the Center for International Energy Strategic Studies of Renmin University (CIESS) and the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) co-held a roundtable on 'The impact of North American energy independence on China' at Renmin University, discussing the impact of North American energy independence on world energy flows and Chinese energy policies, etc. from the perspective of energy relations and geopolitics. The meeting concluded that: the North American shale gas revolution will continue to have a significant impact on global oil and gas flows and present opportunities and challenges to China; the overall impact of North American energy independence on China is considered to do 'more good than harm', 'the opportunities outweigh the challenges', North American energy independence 'has more influence on China's domestic policy than on its international policy', 'has more indirect than direct influence' and 'has more long-term than short-term impact'; China should seize the opportunity to build a diversified, stable and reliable energy supply system and actively participate in global energy governance and safeguard national energy security in an open economy.
