Objective To evaluate the effects of taurine on streptozotocin (STZ ) -induced diabetic cataract. Methods 140 SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: normal control, cataract, preventive, oral treatment, eye drop application and subconjunctival injection groups. Diabetic cataract was induced by STZ intraperitoneal injection (70 mg/kg in 0.1mol/L sodium citrate buffer). Right after STZ injection, prevention group received 1% taurine solution in drinking water. After two weeks of STZ injection, the last three groups were given 1% taurine solution drinking,6. 5% taurine drops in conjunctival sac (four times a day) and 6. 5% taurine as subconjunctival injection (two times a week), respectively. Lenses were examined using a slit lamp once a week. At the end of 2 weeks,4 weeks,8 weeks after STZ injection, blood was collected to measure the blood glucose, and lenses were isolated to measure the content of sorbitol, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Results in cataractous lenses the content of sorbitol and MDA were markedly increased. In each group of using taurine, there were no significant changes in the levels of sorbitol, while the activities of SOD improved, the quantity of MDA decreased and the lens opacity was delayed and the opacity degree was obviously slight. Meanwhile, blood glucose level could be lowered through oral taurine. Conclusion Taurine can lower blood glucose, inhibit lens lipid peroxide reaction, stabilize the structure of cells and regulate the osmotic pressure within the lens, so it can prevent or delay cataract formation and development in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
