This article makes an introduction on the concept, design mode, and the latest design trend of neonatal intensive care unit （NICU） in America and discusses its reference for the hospital design in China. First, it makes a review on the latest trend of NICU in America by some documents, including emphasizing and accommodating family-centered care, using single rooms instead of open bay areas, and optimizing the acoustic and lighting environment. Then, a comparative study is made for the NICU design guidelines in the two countries. Specific recommendations are provided with regards to future NICU design in China.
