In recent decades there has been a worldwide proliferation of waterfront redevelopment projects, and forming opportunities for the re-imaging of New Zealand's cities. The waterfront is a valuable part of the urban, as both scarce and culturally-laden public space, of a unique and growing importance. There are three core concerns that have been essential in WA's experience of waterfront design: the generous scale, the rich and complex edges, pro[bund culture and corresponding to these concerns are core design responses. This article discusses waterfront development, the Jellicoe Precinct, recently completed by Wraight + Associates (WA) and design partner Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL). It has a particular focus on the retention and re-use of its industrial fabric and industrial-sized space.
