Li Hu and Huang Wenjing founded OPEN Architecture in New York and moved to Beijing in 2006, where they practice architecture with an eye to producing strategies to meet the challenges posed by China’s urban transformation. The team has provocatively suggested that the population of Beijing could comfortably live in half the space currently used and argued for the modernity of traditional Chinese architectural designs. In the AW Interview, Li and Huang discuss these ideas and also answer questions about their passion for Le Corbusier, the need for Chinese architects to become innovative leaders in design, and what they’ve learned from masscustomization.
