Anneke Coppoolse’s begins her walks through Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei with the observation that consumption and shopping induce counter practices of wasting and waste collection. In densely populated areas such as Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei, these practices – and the rubbish they involve – are extra present, visually and aromatically, but also constantly and 'organically'. Indeed, practices of waste collection are bodily affairs in which interactions between trash (matter), the body and the urban environment play out rhythmically, giving these neighbourhoods a recognizable temporality. Moreover, Coppoolse’s methodological decision to walk and observe the multisensory nuances of Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei also allows her to explore the political economic reality of trash and its position in the larger narratives of Hong Kong.
