To understand the pathological changes of blood_brain barrier and neural cells in brainstem following cerebral trauma. Methods:The vascular endothelial cells(CD 31 ) and plasma proteins (albumin and IgM) in human brainstem were demonstrated immunohistochemically.Results∶(1) In normal brainstem tissue, the vascular endothelial cells stained with anti_CD 31 antiserum were continuous with each other without obvious perivascular spaces.Positively stained plasma proteins could only be observed within blood vessels, there seemed to be no plasma protein_positive neural cells or nerve fibers.(2) In the brainstem with cerebral trauma, clusters of divorced endothelial cells were observed in blood vessels with perivascular space remarkably widened. Moreover, staining of albumin,IgM positive neural cells and nerve fibers were observed. Conclusion:The blood_brain barrier as well as neural cells in brainstem were damaged after cerebral trauma.
