The information fusion theory including the basic concept , main motivations to stimulate its development, existing contents and methods is introduced. The applications of information fusion theory in military affairs, civil techniques and artificial intelligence are also discussed. The author looks into the future of the emerging discipline and indicates its meaning for the defense industry and high-tech development in our country.
