In this essay, architecture professor Gu Daqing explores the perceptual mechanisms through which architects perceive space when manipulating points, lines, and shapes on paper. His analysis centers on the issue of continuous space, which is a key concept of modern architecture. Gu first introduces a set of diagrams that explore the spatial implications of points, lines, and shapes andhow they focus attention in space. The second set of diagrams are based on a Gestalt illustration and suggest how negative space becomes positive when a shape emerges through the hints of formal elements surround it. The emerged shape is onty a phenomenon, not physically exists. I call it an implied shape.
