In the 65 years after Sun Li began his career as a writer in the year 1937, his thoughts and creation have experi- enced four ups and downs. From passion to disillusionment, his history is a painful record of the rise and fall of a literary giant. His disillusionment with life in general includes his disillusionment with his ideal, his career, his love and his life. It is not some temporary melancholy or specific sadness, but a fundamental suspicion of the meaning and value of exist- ence. The flaws in his philosophy of life, his way of thinking and his personality drive him to abandon everything complete- ly, and to end his life in silence and peace. The development of Sun Li＇ s psychology and his mind in his old ages have been at once representative and unique, and are worthy of discussion and exploration.
