The distribution of steroid estrogens (SEs) in source water and surface water in Shang- hai was investigated using solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatograph. Estradiol equiv- alent quantity (EEQcal) was converted to nonylphenol equivalent quantity (NEQ), and risk assessment of water samples was performed based on German environmental quality standard and USEPA' s water cri- teria for SEs. The results showed that the SEs contents in Shanghai' s source water and surface water were 0 to 0.10 μLg/L, and the estrogenic activity ( calculated as EEQcal ) was 0 to 0.50 μg/L. Due to high level of the estrogenic activity, studies on SEs control technology should be urgently carried out to ensure drinking water safety.
