Double Characters from the Feministic Perspective——A Study of May Welland in The Age of Innocence

长期以来,《纯真年代》中的梅.韦兰一直被视为传统保守的旧时代女性,是男权社会的受害者,也是男权社会制度的维护者。本文从女性主义理论视角对梅.韦兰予以分析解读,认为梅具有复杂的双重性格,她一方面是男权社会的产物,另一方面又具有一定的现代意识,是一个在有限的条件之下力图主宰自己命运的生活强者。

May Welland in The Age of Innocence has been regarded as a conservative woman,who is a victim of the patriarchal society,and also an assertor of the patriarchal society ever since a long time ago.This paper found out that may is a lady who has double characters.On one hand,May is a product of the patriarchal society;on the other hand,she has conservative feminist awareness,and she is a strong person who can master her own fate under limited conditions.
