Unsavory Elements: Stories of Foreigners on the Loose in China was a collection of articles written by 28 foreigners who live (now or at some point) in China for a significant period of time. Tom Carter, editor of the book, was surprised that so many writers had agreed to contribute. The book contains beautiful and enlightening stories about China. Contributors include Simon Winchester (author of The River at the Center of the World), Peter Hessler (author of River Town), Susan Conley (author of The Foremost Good Fortune), and Alan Paul (author of Big in China). They illustrate the many sides of Chinese life; the weird, the fascinating and the appalling, and they share what it's like to live, learn and love -- as an outsider -- in a land unlike any other. As outsiders, they are able to experience, and find themselves in, outstanding situations. Carter says these privileges, more than anything, define the expat experience in China.
