Vietnam is a very important refined oil importer in the Asia-Pacific region and major destination of China's gasoline and diesel exports. Since 2011 Vietnam's oil demand has exceeded production. In February 2010 Vietnam's largest refinery came on line with 6.5 million tons of crude processing capacity. Since then Vietnam's nearly complete refined-oil import-dependency has come to an end. Vietnam plans to boost its oil refining capacity to 25-30 million tons by 2020 and has at least six projects under way. As more refineries come into production, the increase in Vietnam's domestic refining capacity will have a big near-term influence not only on the domestic crude oil supply market as exports decrease and imports have begun, and but also on the Asian refined oil market where Vietnam may export.
