During the archaeological excavation in November of 2001 at the new campus of Xi' an University of Technology in southern suburb of Xi' an, a crown composed of hundreds of parts and components of different materials was found in Li Chui' s tomb of the Tang Dynasty. It would be difficult and unlikely to conserve and restore the crown under the uncontrollable environment and within the limited time onsite if the parts and components were picked up one by one, because the original information might be lost, and the original positions of parts and components might be confused and the organic traces might be missing. Therefore, Li Chui' s crown was entirely fetched by a gypsum block to the conservation laboratory. The conservation and restoration of the crown was made successfully under the controllable laboratory environment and within the unlimited time. This case supplies a valuable experience as reference for the conservation and restoration of cultural relics having complicated structure with different materials.
