As a religious expression, the Buddhist ritual of releasing animal life is an externalization of the Buddhist pursuit of going beyond life.Buddhists believe that by releasing natural life people can get reward which turns into a purification of one’s own soul. The various symbols used in the ritual all show the meaning of this purification and change. The spatial organization in the ritual not only expresses an ethicalized spatial order, but also is a particular Buddhist imagined space.Through this spatial metaphor, people project the spatial relations to non-spatial spaces. The ritual of releasing animal life becomes the extended space where animals get their second life and people get their life beyond.
