Hamlet and Macbeth are adapted from legend and document, in which no signs of madness are mentioned. However, Shakespeare added madness into his tragedies so as to make it an important factor in shaping characters and enhancing conflicts. The essay demonstrates various criticisms made on the madness of the four characters. Critics disagreed on whether Hamlet's madness is pretended or genuine. Ophelia's madness pricks the tenderest part of the human heart. Mrs. Macbeth's madness is the consequence of the inflicted conscience. Macbeth's psych, when analyzed by the psychiatric approach, also has the symptoms of hysteria. The investi- gation of the historical papers reveals the background when the two plays were accomplished and analyzes the role of madness in the two plays from the perspective of new historicism.
