Ishmael Reed labels his works Neo-HooDooism, a distinctive postmodern style which originates from the African American folk religion Hoodoo. In Yellow Back Radio Broke Down, Reed applies Hoodoo positively for the first time in his novels and embraces Hoodoo rituals into historical narration. By featuring a Hoodoo sorcerer/cowboy who challenges the western frontier myth, Reed signifies on the western dime novel genre, and realizes African American historical identity and artistic freedom through Neo-Hoodooism.
