The debate of ＂word for word＂, ＂sense for sense＂ and the concept of ＂faithfulness＂ is always the focus in the field of translation. With the development of translation studies, the concept of ＂faithfuhess＂ has been extended and enriched. With the guidance of theoreti- cal framework of redefined faithfulness, the paper is intended to provide a new perspective to the research into the concept of faithfulness and enrich the research on translation versions of Tess of the D＇Urbervilles through case study of two Chinese versions of Tess of the D＇Urbervilles
