Ulysses, James Joyce's masterpiece, is a typical carnivalized novel, which introduces many folk factors of Ireland. As an essential element of folk culture, the freedom led by laughter is excellently displayed in the novel. In Ulysses, laughter leads the suppressed characters to freedom from the fear of death, from the renewal and rebirth and from the casual speeches, both physically and spiritually. On the basis of Mikhail Bakhtin's analysis of carnival and laughter, this paper is devoted to discussing laughter in the camivalized Ulysses.
