First exploration for the Needham's first visiting Northwest University in 1945

考察李约瑟博士1945年中国北部之行时,初次访问西北大学的历史事件,为科学史研究提供线索和历史佐证。李约瑟博士于1945年9月15日至9月18日首次访问了位于汉中城固的国立西北大学,期间访问西北工学院,会见了西北大学诸位学者,作了题为《科学与民主主义》的学术报告,李大斐博士也作了演讲,代表中英科学合作馆向图书馆捐赠了数百册图书与期刊杂志。访问西北大学反映了中英科学合作馆对中国西北高校的帮助,在众多考察过的研究机构中,西北大学给李约瑟留下了非常好的印象,为其后两次再访西北大学奠定了基础。

To study the historical event： Dr. Needham＇s first visiting Northwest University in 1945, and to provide clues and historical evidence for studying the history of science in China. Literature review and comparative analysis are used. Dr. Joseph Needham visited Northwest University from 15 Sep. to 18 Sep. 1945, also visited Northwest Engineering College during these days. He met lots of scholars of Northwest University, and made a lecture entitled as ＂Science and Democracy＂, his wife Dorothy Needham also made an academic report. He donated hundreds of books and periodicals to the library on behalf of the Sino-British Scientific Cooperation Office. This event reflected the help of SBSCO to colleges in northwest China. Among the numerous research institutes which Needham visited, Northwest University left good impression to Needham, which laid the foundation for his next twice visiting Northwest University.
