Two varieties of cassava, SC124 and ARG7, were treated as experimental materials because of significantly different drought resist- ance. Effects of drought hardening on the content changes of abscisic acid, proline and soluble sugar in cassava leaves were clarified in this research. The results showed that drought hardening could significantly increase the accumulation of ABA and its rate, different species could reach the maximum accumulation of ABA in four days, and the stronger drought resistance the greater accumulation rate of ABA; under water stress, the content of proline in cassava leaves was higher than that of the control, and the maximum accumulation of preline maintained a longer time; glucose and fructose in cassava leaves gradually accumulated with the extension of drought time and then decreased slightly at the end of drought stress; sucrose in cassava leaves accumulated in the early days of drought stress, and maintained at a low level after a sharp decline; drought hardening can increase the accumulation of soluble sugar in cassava leaves at different time of drought stress. The study provided a theoretical basis for the further research and artificially increasing cassava drought resistance.
