文献—发生学是夏中义创立的学术—思想史研究方法,其基本步骤是首先在文献层面发现各种学术"症候",再沉潜到价值层面去探寻其赖以发生的心理根源,并据此展现学术贡献与学人灵魂间的关系。它奠基于夏中义相关的学术积累,催化于内心的使命意识,生成于百年文论史案的研究实践,定型于方法论层面的系统阐述。文献—发生学方法不单给史案研究提供了一种行之有效的新型工具,还为中西交汇时代将西学与中国经验的有机融合提供了一种示范。这种"以文读心"的方法,将科学分析与人本精神结合起来,不仅体现了21世纪学术研究中的新思路与新导向,而且在扭转空疏学风上具有特殊的效力。

Established by Xia Zhongyi, the Method of Philological Genetics is a kind of research method on the history of academic thoughts. Its three basic steps are：first, to find the various academic ＂symptoms＂ on the level of documents; secondly, to seek after its psychological root on the level of values; and thirdly, to dis- close the relationship between academic contributions and the author- scholars;soul and mentality. It is origi- nated from Zhongyi~ long - term academic accumulation, motivated by his sense of mission, based upon years of researches and experiments about history of literary theory, and stereotyped in an analysis of methodology. The method of Philological Genetics not only provides an effective new tool for academic case study, but also sets a good example for integrating Chinese experiences organically with Western styles. That, based upon lit- erature, the soul -finding method combines scientific analysis with human spirit, not only reflecting a new train of thoughts and a new direction of academic research during the 21 st century, but bearing special impacts upon the redressing of the shallow academic tradition as well.
