史籍中对台湾平埔族的"四社番"屡有记载,历代均将其作为"熟番"的代表人群。然而"四社番"一词具体指代的原住民群落却在不同时期有所区别,"四社番"一词的含义的变迁反映了汉人移民逐渐从平原向山地拓殖,并使所到之处的原住民族群纷纷褪去原有的文化特色,与汉人社会融为一体的过程。
