上个世纪中叶,由于航空和高速公路的快速发展,传统的铁路受到挤压,在运输市场上份额逐渐缩小。七、八十年代坊间一度将第一次工业革命象征的铁路与火车喻为夕阳工业。高铁的出现以及节能环保的新要求,本世纪铁路发展又出现了新的生机,高铁更是成为现代科技改造传统工业的典范。中国铁路发展方兴未艾。中国向西的广大中亚、西亚国家,中国向南的广大东南亚、南亚国家正渴望铁路现代化的升级与发展。
The writer of this article is Zhao Xiaogang, then chairman of the board of China Southern Locomotive and Rolling Stock. He brings up the concept of big development of railway in this article that 'layouts for both international and domestic railway construction should be implemented'. These two set of layouts will cover the whole land of China and even spreading thousands of miles far into the south and the west. It takes huge investment and possibly 20 years, even longer, to make the concept material. From that point, these two layouts of railway construction are the new impetus for the development of China's productivity.
