Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye is a literary figure full of contradictions. This essay aims to reveal the cultural symbolic meaning of this character against the cultural and social background of the early 1950s, with reference to the appearance of a conforming society, the formation of classic American literature, the discovery of the identity of the American youth and especially the cultural atmosphere of the Cold War containment.
