The novel Saturday (2005) by British writer Ian McEwan highlights his concern about the disputes between the "Two Cultures" as well as his cogitation over the function of the novel and the role of literature while extending recurring themes in his works, such as humanity, ethics, politics, science and culture. Following the personal narration focusing on the protagonist' s one-day journey, Saturday describes the impact of 9/11 and the Iraq War imposed on human life, reflecting the novel' s functions as cultural discourse, ethical paradigm, prophetic mode and subjective mode.
