伯内特的《秘密花园》内蕴着"成长"这一永恒而深刻的主题。小主人公玛丽的成长贯穿于文本始终,是这一主题的集中体现。在弗洛伊德人格结构理论的视域下,玛丽的成长可划分为三个阶段:最初锁闭世界下形成的扭曲人格;经过自我的找寻逐步实现生命的复活;在爱之魔力的作用下形成至善至美的超我,达成人格的健全完美。玛丽的成长也就是她本我、自我、超我三种力量的形成和交互作用的过程。

Bumetto＇s book The Secret Garden contains an eternal and deep theme of growth, and the little hero Mary＇s growth through- out the text. Mary is the point of this novel. According to Freudian theory of personality structure, Mary＇s growth process can be divid- ed into three stages. Initially Mary lives in a closed world and holds a distorted personality. Then, the resurrection of life was achieved through ego-finding gradually. Finally under the action of the magic of love Mary formats perfect super-ego and forms a sound personali- ty. Mary＇s growth is the forming and interjecting process of id, ego and super-ego.
