Somatosensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglia and trigeminal ganglia mediate various sensations from our body, including pain, itch, temperature, touch, and body position. One subset of these somatosensory neurons, the Aβ low-threshold mechanoreceptors, is designated for discriminative touch, such as sensing texture, vibration, and object shape. In a review on pages 408-420 of this issue, Fleming and Luo review the morphology, physiology, function, and development of different types of mammalian Aβ mechanoreceptors.
