The new advance in coupled mode theory of the dielectric waveguide system isdescribed.In order to treate the some contradiction of the coupled mode theories,two kinds ofuseful formulas are given using the partial modal amplitude expansion and projection modalamplitude expamsion methods,which are vertified to be identical except for different initial con-ditions.The virtues and defects of the recent improved coupled mode formula and classic coup-led mode formula are also discussed.Finally,it is pointed out the some subjects which needto be solved and new direction for the coupled mode theory in future.
