Kunming is the political, economics and cultural center of Yunnan province. As an important city in Southwest China, it has undergone a long period of development and evolution. Tuodong Cheng was the original city of Kunming, which was built more than 1,200 years ago during the Nanzhao Dynasty. In its long history of development, Kunming City has been expanded many times to evolve to its present form. Four stages of development can be identified: 1. From 764 AD to 765 AD, Tuodong Cheng was established with pioneering significance; 2. Around 1050 AD, Shanchan Cheng formed from expanded Tuodong Cheng; 3. From 1274 AD to 1279 AD in the Yuan Dynasty, which was a period of great expansion for Kunming City, the Zhongqinglu Cheng came into being; 4. From the year 1382 on, Fu Cheng began to be built, which was determinant to the further development of Kunming City. All the changes are reflected through expansions of urban areas and evolution of urban structures. By examining into the temporal and spatial changes of the urban area of Kunming as well as the consequent changes in the city` s internal structure, the historical evolution of Kunming City can be reproduced, and is therefore referential to the urban sustainable development.
