Eugene O＇Neill not only combines the techniques of traditional playwriting with those of modernism, but applies the techniques of novel-writing to his playwriting. 1920-1932 is a unique phase, for he employs the techniques of modernism such as masks in his playwriting. So masks come out in different forms in his plays, like a mirror, reflecting and revealing the characters＇ twisted, abnormal and complex psychology.
