The Military Function of the Yishui Region in History

易水位于河北平原中部的凹陷低洼地带,与古白洋淀、文安洼等构成隔离南北的一道水域,它在历史上的军事地位十分重要。战国时期为燕、赵分界,宋辽时为两国界河,易水地区的防御重点在于抵御敌军的北上或南下;明清时期,作为京师的西南屏障,易水地区的防御重点转为关城与隘口间的相互支援与配合。

Yishui is located in the lowland of the central Hebei Plains, forming an east-to-west water channel with the ancient Baiyangdian Lake and the Wenan Depression. During the Warring States period, it was a dividing river of the Yan and the Zhao states; it was also the boundary river of the two states during the Song-Liao dynasties. The region was a defense against enemies from the north and to the south. It was the southwest imperial barrier during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The defense importance of the Yishui region is the mutual support and cooperation between towns and passes. Historically, its military position was very important.
