Singapore As Described In Poems Composed By Ancient Chinese Scholars

新华古典诗文中所隐藏的史料,很少为学者重视。以古典诗文作为切入点,通过古典诗文,考察与了解19世纪新加坡的历史、人文社会风貌及其与中国近代史的关系,这为学者们研究新华历史、研究华人社会文献,提供了一个新的尝试。

Few historians realized that those poems composed by ancient Chinese scholars in fact contained many local historical information on the earlier days of Singapore. This paper cited many examples of such poems which described, among other things, social customs, attractions and scenery, as well as how the social fabric of early Chinese in Singapore were interwoven to the political plights of modem China in those days. The writer therefore concluded that those ancient poems could provide historians with another valuable source to understand and to study the history of the early Chinese in Singapore.
